He sent pics to our employee group saying he’s blacklisted. That regular texted the owner instantly and he came in and removed him from the property. He’s sitting there drinking and was bragging to a respected regular about how he’s only 19 and how good his fake is. He came in on a day I wasn’t working and one of the young girls were. The owner said okay, we will handle it if he comes back. The next day I get on his moms FB and screen grab pics his mom posted a month earlier wishing him a happy 19th birthday. It’s his real name, scans, etc… so he’s allowed to stay. Anyways, I am friends this kids mother and I knew he wasn’t 21 so I told the owner who asked for his ID and everything checked out. Some of our bartenders were only 21-22 so I always had to keep an eye out for their friends not being of age. I was working at a neighborhood bar and saw this kid with a drink in his hand. There’s no doubt in my mind that the parents wouldn’t target us if something terrible happened. I’m really referring to the liability of serving an underaged person. And yes, I agree, it’s stupid 18 year olds can fight in a war but not drink a beer. People are taking that statement as if I meant it literally and I did not. I’m just upset.Įdit: ok I should’ve said “dumb kids” instead of child. My heart sinks every time I find out they got past me and everyone else on my team… that I was feeding alcohol to a child… that they could’ve hurt themselves or someone else. How the fuck can I prevent this if it looks legit AF, they answer all the questions I have about the ID, and then I go and scan it on the NJ lotto machine and it’s good? I’ve been doing this for years… I felt pretty good about vetting ids and catching the fakes, but this has thrown me for a loop. I’ve been told they are paying 400-500 bucks for ids that scan. Over the past month or so, we’ve found out that a couple of them were in fact under age through various sources. We also have an ID scanner on the lotto machine and that helped, BUT… We carded them all, each of us on our 8 person team, and we quickly weeded out the bad fakes. Around thanksgiving last year we had a swarm of freshly 21-22 yo kids start coming into our bar. Just found out yet another one of our recently regular kids is 20 years old. 20% or $1/drink in North America is quite common (often because of our lower priced drinks and staff that is paid a lower amount) and a good guideline to follow overall.Ħ) I just started as a barback but know nothing where do I start? Ordering a Cosmo at a busy cocktail lounge on a friday night in New York, one would expect to tip more than ordering a bottle of beer at a pub in Ireland.
